Interview with Gonzalo Ramallo, a graduate of the Marketing Analyst program at Universidad ORT Uruguay, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Strategic Marketing and Sales Management at the University of Barcelona. Ramallo is the business manager at Content Ignition, an online agency specializing in analytics and database marketing.
The graduate, who is also an audiovisual producer, discussed how his degree helped him complement his interests and achieve his goals both in his studies and in his career.
What motivated you to study to become a marketing analyst?
I worked in television advertising as a producer. My reason for pursuing this degree was to take a step back in the production chain, but a step forward in terms of knowledge.
The uncertainties surrounding “who is behind it” or “why this type of communication is being created and for which media” sparked my curiosity and desire to learn.
I believe that studying to become a Marketing Analyst is one of the most important and best decisions I’ve ever made.
Do you think a career as a marketing analyst could be a good fit for someone with diverse interests?
Yes, given that we need marketing for everything in life. We apply it unconsciously every day. After all, we ourselves are a personal brand, and as such, we make decisions that have an impact day by day.
The program provides the tools and resources needed to enter the job market. In my case, it marked a shift in focus regarding my professional career. It helped me improve, and I’m very grateful for that.
What are your responsibilities at Content Ignition?
Content Ignition presents a major challenge: selling to other companies. That’s what caught my attention from the moment the opportunity to work there arose. Within the company, we develop new business. Specifically, I’m currently working on the Spanish and French markets.
I’m also responsible for coordinating the technical team to deliver the orders and projects requested by our clients.
What was it like moving to another country for work?
It was definitely a complete turnaround. Resilience plays a very important role in these kinds of decisions. I knew all along that these were new challenges and learning opportunities. I was motivated by the prospect of exploring new markets. It was something that’s hard for all of us: stepping out of our comfort zone.
When we think we’re doing well, we can actually be doing much better. When you stop learning and studying, you stop growing, and when you stop growing, you stagnate.
How did your degree help you tackle these new challenges?
What I gained most from the Marketing Analyst program was confidence. In addition to the experience—especially toward the end of the program, when you really put the knowledge you’ve acquired into practice—
This experience provided a solid foundation for my career and gave me the confidence I needed to tackle these challenges.
You're pursuing a master's degree at the University of Barcelona. How do you see yourself in relation to your fellow students in the program?
It’s a great experience to be pursuing this master’s degree. By connecting with people from other cultures, you learn from everyone—and especially about other markets. The academic standard, which is very high, is on par with that of ORT’s Marketing Analyst program.
The most important aspect, both in the Marketing Analyst program and in this master’s degree, is the teaching. The experience each instructor brings to the table is crucial. They’re all actively working in their respective fields.
That’s the true value of a degree program. After all, the rules are more or less the same: how to conduct a SWOT analysis or develop an action plan on paper is always the same. What’s truly different is the market and the people who introduce you to that market.
After studying film and marketing, you decided to pursue a career in marketing. Why?
While studying to become a marketing analyst, I discovered my true calling, and I’m truly passionate about what I do.
