Women are not choosing careers in technology

September 18, 2015
The graduate coordinator for the School of Engineering, Ana Laura Trías, was interviewed by El País TV about women in the technology sector.

Interview on Women in TechnologyDuring the interview, the coordinator was joined by Carla Salvadori, product manager at El País, and Irene Pazos, an IT consultant.

The interview highlighted the low representation of women in the ICT sector—16%—and emphasized that there is no reason for this to be the case.

“In the School of Engineering, we see entire groups of men, so it’s to be expected that this pattern would be replicated in the business sector,” Trías said.

The coordinator explained that women do not recognize the opportunities in the sector, even though it is an area with high demand for labor, offers better pay than other industries, has export potential, and provides greater opportunities for entrepreneurship.

“We’re working to identify the barriers and myths that prevent women from pursuing careers in technology,” she added.
