Presentation of the La Casa Uruguaya prototype in Tres Cruces

On September 3, 2015, the prototype of La Casa Uruguaya—an architectural project created by faculty and students at the university—was unveiled on the plaza of the Tres Cruces shopping mall and bus terminal. The prototype remained on display from September 2 to 6, 2015. Speakers included Daniel Martínez, mayor of Montevideo; Olga Otegui, national director of Energy; Paul Riezler, president of the Uruguayan-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Gastón Boero, dean of the School of Architecture; and Andrés Eliseo Cabrera, coordinator of La Casa Uruguaya.

Mayor Martínez noted that La Casa Uruguaya is La Casa Uruguaya a hub for the development of ideas that enable us to adopt more environmentally friendly practices," and he highlighted "the creativity, the contribution of ideas, the generation of new thinking, and the entrepreneurial spirit of young Uruguayan men and women."

For her part, Ms. Otegui said that for the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining, "this project is very important because it will foster the development of national capabilities," and she emphasized that the fact that the company is 100% Uruguayan is part of the challenge of "achieving a synergy between energy and industry."

La Casa Uruguaya in the world finals of the international Solar Decathlon competition in Cali, Colombia, this December.

It involves the design and construction of a self-sustaining housing unit powered by renewable solar energy and with a minimal ecological footprint, which can be mass-produced, is low-cost, and innovative.
