The ASC aims to strengthen academic and cultural ties between Australia and the region, particularly with Uruguay. The Center works to collaborate with researchers, students, and academics in fields of mutual interest in Australia and Uruguay, helping to foster academic relationships between the two countries.
The Centre's public activities include: lectures, conferences, seminars, and other events designed to attract a diverse audience, helping to foster a more comprehensive, detailed, and balanced understanding of Australia.
The institute will award scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members in order to support academic mobility between Australia and Uruguay.
The Center is initially funded by Petrel Energy and Universidad ORT Uruguay.
Strategy 2017–2019
- To establish a regional reputation for the Centre in Australian Studies research over the next three years, particularly in relation to its key areas of study (as defined in the 2017–2019 Key Areas of Study), and as a major contributor to the regional understanding of Australia, its past, its present, and its future directions.
This includes: establishing the Centre as a recognized platform for communication with other Australian Studies centres worldwide; and fostering a strong connection to the Centre among members of the research, faculty, alumni, and student communities in Uruguay. - To develop exchange and scholarship programs for Uruguayan faculty and students.
- To raise the ASC’s media and online profiles in Uruguay and Australia by hosting high-profile speakers who address current issues in debates, seminars, conferences, and public lectures.
- To develop strategic partnerships to help the ASC achieve its goal of promoting understanding of Australia in the region.
ASC’s main objectives
- To organize conferences, seminars, and roundtables on current issues in Australia and their relationship with the region.
- To promote study abroad and student exchange programs.
- To promote academic cooperation with Australian universities, particularly faculty exchange programs and activities that support the Uruguayan graduate education system.
- To develop courses on Australian history, politics, international relations, economics, business, society, education, culture, literature, sustainability, and environmental issues.
- To develop comparative research projects between Australia and the region.
