European Union: Multilateralism and Conflict Resolution

On Tuesday, June 27, the first webinar of the Jean Monnet Module “Thinking Europe” offered by the Department of International Studies at Universidad ORT Uruguay was held, titled “Multilateralism in the European Union and Conflict Resolution.”

The conference "European Union Multilateralism and Conflict Resolution" was moderated by Dr. Juan Manuel Rivero Godoy, secretary of the Permanent Court of Review of Mercosur and professor of public international law at the School of Administration and Social Sciences at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The event, organized by the Department of International Studies at Universidad ORT Uruguay, took place on Tuesday, June 27, in a hybrid format (some participants attended in person, while others joined viaHyFlex®). It consisted of two sessions, one in the morning (from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) and another in the afternoon (from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.).  

The morning session, attended by 100 people, including students, diplomats, and staff from chambers of commerce, was titled “The Extraterritoriality of European Regulations and the Agreement with Mercosur.”

Dr. Juan Manuel Rivero Godoy outlined the main principles of the European Union’s trade policy and discussed with the audience the differences with Mercosur and the challenges ahead.

Next to speak was Dr. Jamile Mata Diz, professor of international law at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and coordinator of the university’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence. The professor spoke on the extraterritoriality of European Union regulations, focusing on the environment, timber exports, and deforestation.  

The afternoon session was attended by 40 participants and was titled “The European Union and the World Trade Organization: A Look Toward a New Multilateralism.” 

Dr. Sandra Negro, a tenured professor of Integration Law at the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and director of the Observatory on the Implementation of the Mercosur-European Union Agreement at the same university, gave a presentation on the prospects and ties between these two organizations.  

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session with the participants.
