Graduada is the winner ofthe 4th Marcelo Jelen National Print Media Award

The article “Tell Them Not to Kill Me” by Nausicaa Palomeque, a graduate of the Bachelor’s Program in Journalism at Universidad ORT Uruguay a professor in the School of Communication and Design, won the4th Marcelo Jelen National Prize for Print Journalism.

His work, which won an award on March 9, 2020, was published by Lento, the monthly magazine of La Diaria, on February 19, 2019.

The jury highlighted how the text and images complement each other to tell the story of the Central American migration crisis through the eyes of its protagonists—a harrowing drama that prompts reflection on the debate regarding public safety in Uruguay during this election year.

He also highlighted the inclusion of firsthand accounts, which allow readers to hear and feel, without intermediaries, the voices of the victims of that reality so close to home.

The Marcelo Jelen Award was established in 2016 on the initiative of Cotidiano Mujer, the Uruguayan Press Association, UN Women, and UNESCO, two years after the journalist’s death, with the aim of challenging groupthink and promoting diversity and non-discrimination.
