The date chosen by the State of Israel and the global Jewish community to hold this commemoration year after year is, on the Jewish calendar, the 27th day of the month of Nisan—the day in 1943 when a group of the few Jews remaining in the Warsaw Ghetto faced off against the Nazi army as it attempted to transport them all to concentration and extermination camps.
The result was the complete destruction of the ghetto.
