La Casa Uruguaya first prize in a competition organized by the Chilean Wood Corporation

La Casa Uruguaya, a project designed and built by students, graduates, and faculty members of Universidad ORT Uruguay, won first place on August 10, 2017, in the “El Público Elige. Arquitectura en Madera” competition with 3,740 votes, as part of Wood Week 2017 in Chile.

The competition aimed to highlight projects built between 2007 and 2017 in Latin America where wood plays a significant role, whether in the structure or in the cladding. In this first edition, 21 projects were submitted, including homes, hotels, gyms, office buildings, and retail spaces. La Casa Uruguaya the only project submitted that was built abroad.

Wood Week is an event organized by the Chilean Wood Corporation, which will take place from August 23 to 27 of this year in Santiago. First held in 2006, it is an annual event promoting the use of wood in Chile.

The project will receive a certificate at the Awards Ceremony and will be displayed in a prominent location within the Wood Week exhibition, which will take place at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Complex. Organizers estimate an attendance of 30,000 people for this eleventh edition.

La Casa Uruguaya a self-sustaining housing project that received support from companies and organizations in the sector.

This new recognition follows the one from late 2015, when it won the 2015 Solar Decathlon Latin America and the Caribbean international competition in Colombia.
