    On June 25, 2014, the university hosted a ceremony to award the 2014 Ibero-America Scholarship for Young Professors and Researchers, granted by Santander Universities. Dr. Santiago Matalonga, a research professor in software engineering at the School of Engineering, is the recipient of the scholarship.

    On June 30, 2014, the Faculty of Communication and Design hosted a lecture titled “Protocol and Public Relations: Their Purpose,” presented by Carlos Yaffé, Director of Public Relations and Protocol for the Uruguayan Parliament. The speaker explained the fundamentals of protocol within the Uruguayan Parliament using specific examples.

    Magdalena Cárdenas, a professor of molecular biology in the biotechnology programs at the School of Engineering, was selected by Uruguay to participate in the “Meeting of Nobel Laureates,” an international event that brings together outstanding young scientists from around the world. The event took place from June 29 to July 4 in Lindau, Germany.

    The new startup GPSGAY, founded by graduates of Universidad ORT Uruguay, is among the finalists in the Intel Challenge. Its directors, Rosario Monteverde, an engineer, and Magdalena Rodríguez, a graduate, will soon be traveling to California to represent their country in Silicon Valley.

    On June 12, 2014, the renewal of the Specific Agreement on Educational Cooperation was signed between the Carolina Foundation (Spain) and the Council of Rectors of Private Universities of Uruguay. Its purpose is to regulate the awarding of joint scholarships for the training of tenured or full-time faculty members and administrative staff at each university in programs leading to a doctoral degree offered at Spanish universities, as well as short-term research stays for professors with doctoral degrees.

    On June 17, 2014, the Faculty of Communication and Design hosted the conference “The Media vs. the Ballot Box: Three Cases from Recent Campaigns: Pedro Bordaberry, Luis Lacalle Pou, and Tabaré Vázquez.” Participants included Daniel Eskivel, an expert in political psychology and political marketing; Daniel Supervielle, a journalist and strategic consultant; and Esteban Valenti, a journalist and publicist. The speakers analyzed the campaigns leading up to the political parties’ primary elections and their impact on the results. The event was organized by the faculty’s Department of History, Politics, and Society.

    On June 18, 2014, the Faculty of Architecture hosted the roundtable discussion “Design in Three Voices,” in which an interior designer, an industrial designer, and an architect spoke about design from their personal perspectives. The moderator of the event was interior designer Flavio Morán, a tenured professor of interior design at the school and a founding partner of Otroestudiomas, a studio dedicated to architecture, design, and interior design projects.

    The paper “Gentle formalisation of Stoughton’s lambda calculus substitution,” authored by faculty members from the School of Engineering, was accepted on June 3, 2014, for presentation at the “Joint Meeting of the Twenty-Third EACSL Annual Conference on Computer Science Logic (CSL) and the Twenty-Ninth Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS).” The event, organized by the European Association for Computer Science Logic, will take place from July 14 to 18, 2014, in Vienna, Austria.
