These are just some of the characteristics of Mr. Fischer, a German man in his seventies who must face old age and widowhood, since his wife, Lola, passed away almost a year ago. "Mr. Fischer," published in 2011 by Alfaguara, is about the life of a seemingly ordinary man who is, however, burdened with secrets, silences, lies, loves, and hates. The author of the novel is Ana Solari, a professor in the School of Communication and Design who has been teaching workshops on written expression since 1995. Below, she explains the meaning behind her latest novel.

Aug. 16, 2011Saving time is the name of the game. The internet is the place to do it. That’s the goal of the Google+Tweet app by Bruno Barbieri, a 23-year-old student studying to become a software analyst, which has already been downloaded by more than 100,000 users. The goal is to allow users to manage two social networks—Google+ and Twitter—from within Google+. Bruno notes that Agustín Haller, a friend of his and a systems engineering student, is collaborating on the development of this popular app.

Aug. 9, 2011On August 8, 2011, the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences launched the lecture series "Successful Experiences in Technology Management," organized by the Academic Coordination Office of the Master’s Program in Technology Business Management (ICT Specialization) and aimed at members of the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI), as part of cooperative activities. Through this series, eight entrepreneurs present the history of their ventures, the most important decisions they had to make regarding their companies, their mindset as entrepreneurs, and the current and future status of their ventures, within the general context and specifically within the IT sector, both nationally and internationally.

Aug. 8, 2011Photographer Leonardo Barizzoni, a photography instructor at the School of Communication and Design, opened his photo exhibition “Uruguayans” on August 2, 2011, at the Open-Air Photo Gallery in Parque Rodó (Pablo de María and Rambla Wilson). It is a collection of portraits of Uruguayan figures from various fields. The exhibition is open to the public through September 27.

Aug. 4, 2011The "AIXA" bench by Timothy Goodman, a student in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program, won First Prize in the Student Division—Residential Furniture Category—atthe 2011 Salão Design Casa Brasil, the largest product design competition in Latin America. The exhibition and awards ceremony for the competition took place from August 2 to 6 at the Bento Gonçalves Event Park in Rio Grande do Sul, concurrently with the "Feria Casa Brasil 2011."

A Long Road to Competitiveness*, published in Buenos Aires by Granica, took place at the ORT Pocitos Auditorium. The presentation was led by Roberto Kreimerman, Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining; Dr. Gaston Labadie, Dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences; and Ricardo Kaufmann, Professor of General Management at the School of Business and Social Sciences and co-author of the book.

Aug. 2, 2011The team consisting of Viviana Berrogorry and Mariana Franco, students in the Bachelor’s program in Audiovisual Communication, Nicolás Berrogorry, a 12th-grade student at Liceo No. 1 in the department of Treinta y Tres, and Ignacio Lanzani, an engineering student at the University of the Republic, won first place in the “Pro E-Scientia I” competition organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Uruguay. Meanwhile, the team consisting of María Areán, Stephanie García, and Hansi Ruting, students in the Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia Design program, took third place. The competition aimed to create educational audiovisual content about engineering experiences.
