    TEDxMontevideo was the first TEDx event in Uruguay and one of the first in Latin America. This year, the first TEDxJoven@Montevideo took place, aimed primarily at young people.

    On July 30 and 31, 2013, Vicente Lamónaca, a professor of Typographic Design in the School of Communication and Design, presented the book *Latin American Typography: A Current and Future Overview*, which he edited, at the National University of La Plata and the University of Palermo. The book is published by Wolkowicz Editores (Argentina).

    The article “Institution-based semantics for MOF and QVT-relations” by Daniel Calegari, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Computing in the School of Engineering at the University of the Republic, and Dr. Nora Szasz, Academic Coordinator of Systems Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, was accepted in July 2013 for presentation at “CBSoft, the Brazilian Conference on Software: Theory and Practice. Brazilian Symposium on Formal Methods (SBMF).” The event will take place from October 29 to November 4, 2013, in Brasília.

    The article "Initial Teacher Education in Latin America: Key Dilemmas and Perspectives" by Dr. Denise Vaillant, Academic Secretary of the Institute of Education, was published in July 2013 in the Revista Española de Educación Comparada.

    The article “Dynamics of heterogeneous peer-to-peer networks” by Dr. Fernando Paganini, Professor of Telecommunications Theory in the School of Engineering, Dr. Andrés Ferragut, Associate Professor in the Data Networks Area of the School of Engineering, and Martín Zubeldía, Research Assistant in the MATE (Mathematics Applied to Telecommunications) group at the faculty, was accepted in July 2013 for presentation at the “52nd Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Conference on Decision and Control.” The event, organized by the IEEE, will take place from December 10 to 13, 2013, in Florence, Italy.

    Marcelo Lanfranconi studied and graduated with a degree in Systems Engineering from Universidad ORT Uruguay. In 2012, he co-founded Paganza, a startup incubated at the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) that offers an easier way to pay bills. The startup recently won the BBVA Open Talent competition.

    On July 22, 2013, the television program “Bendita TV” received the Gold Award from Sábado Show magazine, published by the newspaper El País. The production team includes graduates and students from the School of Communication and Design. Pablo Tambucho, a graduate of the Bachelor’s program in Audiovisual Communication, is the Executive Producer and Director of the television program.

    On July 9, 2013, the Faculty of Architecture hosted a presentation titled “Enveloping Classics in Interior Design,” led by students in the Bachelor of Interior Design program. The students received feedback on their projects, which were based on notable objects from contemporary culture. The exhibition of the projects took place from July 2 to 9.

    A delegation of 20 students and graduates from the Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design and Interior Design programs will participate in a seminar on interior design at the University of Salamanca in March 2014. The event is organized by AICU (Association for Cultural Exchange). Academic coordination is led by Architect Graziella Blengio, Academic Secretary of the School of Architecture, and Prof. Angel Lozano, Academic Coordinator of the Service for Innovation and Digital Production (Usal TV/Medialab Usal) at the University of Salamanca.

    Prof. Teresa Cometto, a faculty member in the Marketing Department of the School of Management and Social Sciences, presented the paper “Organizational drivers of innovation deployment processes affecting the marketing/sales interface. The case of six Latin American countries” (pdf) at the “2nd Global Innovation and Knowledge Academy (GIKA 2013),” held in Valencia, Spain, from July 9 to 11, 2013. The event was organized by the University of Valencia and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

    On July 4, 2013, the Faculty of Engineering hosted a lecture titled “Agile Project Management” presented by Mariel Feder, Head of Systems and Project Manager at Hípica Rioplatense Uruguay and Coordinator of the Project Management Area at the Faculty of Engineering’s Software Engineering Laboratory. The speaker discussed the SCRUM Agile Management methodology, identified its weaknesses, and proposed the most appropriate interpretation of its principles. The conference was organized by the School of Engineering and the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Technology Management Chapter.

    Dr. Jaime Alonso Gómez, a visiting professor at the School of Graduate and Executive Studies, served as dean and founder of the EGADE Business School at Tecnológico de Monterrey. He is the only business school director in Latin America to have been named Dean of the Year by the AIB.

    On July 28, 2013, David Telias, Coordinator of the Department of Jewish Studies, presented the paper “The Shoah in the Education of Young Uruguayan Jews” in the “Latin America” section of the “16th World Congress of Jewish Studies.” The event, organized by the World Union of Jewish Studies and AMILAT (Agudat Mejkar Iahadut LATinoamerica), took place from July 28 to August 1, 2013, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel).

    The article “An empirically validated simulation for understanding the relationship between process conformance and technology skills” by Dr. Santiago Matalonga, research professor of Software Engineering at the School of Engineering, Dr. Martín Solari, associate professor of Software Engineering at the school, and Dr. Tomás San Feliu, a tenured professor at the School of Computer Science at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, was accepted in July 2013 for publication in the “Software Quality Journal.” The journal is published by Springer

    On July 26, 2013, the Faculty of Engineering hosted the lecture “New Smart Materials: Nanoparticle Technologies Applied to Biosensors,” presented by Dr. Scott Mitchell and Dr. Esther Polo, postdoctoral researchers in the Nanotherapy and Nanodiagnostics Group at the Aragón Institute of Nanoscience at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). The speakers discussed gold nanoparticles, which have been widely used in recent years in the development of various biosensors due to their unique chemical properties.

    She worked as a model for fifteen years; in 2006, she graduated with a degree in architecture; and in 2010, she launched a project she had been developing for ten years: *Doble ALTURA deco*, a magazine covering architecture, interior design, design, and landscaping. Architect María Fernanda Navarro, a graduate of the School of Architecture at Universidad ORT Uruguay, spoke about all of this and more.
