    The Dean of the School of Architecture, Architect Gastón Boero, visited the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile from April 19 to 21, 2012. He was invited by Dr. Alfredo Serpell, Manager of the Training and Workforce Skills Unit at DICTUC, a subsidiary of that university whose mission is to transfer expert knowledge from its School of Engineering. The purpose of the visit was to establish ties and explore potential cooperation agreements between the two institutions for the development of specialization and training courses on topics related to the management and technical supervision of construction projects.

    From April 25 to 27, 2012, a delegation from Positivo University in Curitiba (Brazil) visited the university. The delegation included Prof. Renato Bertao, Coordinator of the Design Program; Larissa Cristina Dal Piva Moreira, Coordinator of International Relations; Prof. Norimar Ferraro, Coordinator of the Architecture and Urban Planning Program, Prof. Marcia Sebastiani, Academic Coordinator, and Prof. Vanete Soccol, Coordinator of the Master’s Program in Biotechnology.

    On April 11, 2012, the lecture “The Sovereign Debt Crisis in Europe: Consequences for Regional Integration” was held in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Marcos Farias, Professor at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) of the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) and Visiting Professor in the Bachelor’s Program in International Studies at the faculty. The aim of the lecture was to analyze whether the consequences of the economic and financial crisis in Europe will have a profound impact on the continent’s integration process. The event was organized by the Department of International Studies.

    MAPI’s new logo was designed by student Patricia Cerban as part of the Re|Creación’12 Integrative Project. The young designer explained that “the new identity” had initially been seen as difficult to implement, “but after seeing the results, the decision-makers were so enthusiastic that they decided to go ahead with the change.”

    Chilean architect Mathias Klotz, the designer of projects such as Casa Klotz, Colegio Altamira, and Bodega Las Niñas, has taken his projects to South America, Asia, and Europe, where he has also given dozens of lectures. On April 19, 2012, he gave a lecture in the auditorium of the School of Architecture.

    For the first time, the School of Architecture at Universidad ORT Uruguay released its *Research Annals*, an annual publication consisting of six illustrated articles spread across 89 pages, which brings together research by domestic and international authors, as well as undergraduate theses that have been adapted into articles.

    Being recognized by Google is an achievement in itself, a great reward for the effort that often took many years. This is the case with the Económica and Chau Philomene One typefaces, which have been part of Google Web Fonts since March 2012, making them the first fonts created in Uruguay to be published on that site. Their creator is Vicente Lamónaca, a 35-year-old professor and graduate of the Bachelor’s program in Graphic Design.

    For the past year, Uruguayan journalist Florencia Melgar has been running Latinhub, a news portal for Australia’s Spanish-speaking community, which numbers about 300,000 people. Before Latinhub existed, there was no website that brought together the news and information immigrants needed in their native language. In addition to being a news portal, “it serves as a very useful first point of contact for newcomers to Australia.”

    The articles “Visibility Analysis and DEM Uncertainty Propagation” by María Victoria Álvarez, a professor in the School of Engineering, “On the Interpolation Algorithm Ranking” by Dr. Carlos López Vázquez, a professor of Geomatics and Director of the university’s LatinGEO laboratory in collaboration with the Military Geographic Service, and “Analysis of uncertainty in wildfire risks,” by Marcos Silveira Antelo, a Database instructor and researcher at the LatinGEO laboratory, were accepted for presentation at the “10th International Symposium on Spatial Accuracy Assessment in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences.” The event, organized by the International Spatial Accuracy Research Association, will take place from July 10 to 13, 2012, in Florianópolis.

    Enrique Kramer, Academic Coordinator of Management and Professor of Strategic Management at the School of Administration and Social Sciences, was named 2011 Mentor of the Year by Endeavor Uruguay. Endeavor is an international nonprofit organization with offices in 13 countries that identifies, mentors, and supports high-potential entrepreneurs.

    On April 16, 2012, the seminar “Innovation and Creativity” began at the School of Business and Social Sciences, led by Juan Carro Casabó, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (Mexico). The seminar addressed creativity as the foundation of innovation, emphasizing the need to spark curiosity and move away from conventional ideas and formal procedures. From April 9 to 19, 2012, Mr. Carro Casabó also led the “Workshop on Difficult Conversations” as part of the Human Resources Diploma Program and the Master’s in Human Resources Management.

    The Academic Coordination Office for Biotechnology at the School of Engineering supported the organization of the international workshop "Food Safety Assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)," which took place on April 16 and 17, 2012, at the Center for Social Security, Health, and Administration Studies of the Social Security Bank. It was organized by the International Food Biotechnology Committee (IFBIC) of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), ILSI Argentina, and the Risk Management Commission of Uruguay (CGR). As part of this workshop, on Tuesday, April 17, practical activities took place in one of the faculty’s computer labs led by Dr. William Price, PhD in Animal Nutrition and Statistics from Purdue University and professor of Crop Sciences at the University of Georgia, and Dr. William Ridley, who holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota and serves as a consultant and adjunct professor in the Department of Nutrition at Saint Louis University.
