    In December 2016, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) recognized the Graduate School of the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences as a Registered Learning Partner. ACCA is an internationally renowned professional accounting organization that promotes, develops, and supports more than 188,000 members worldwide.

    María Azpiroz, a graduate of the Master’s program in Education and coordinator of the Language Center at Universidad ORT Uruguay, defended her dissertation on December 28, 2016, to earn her Doctorate in Education.

    On December 28, 2016, the Center for Innovation in Engineering (CII) approved three projects for the completion of bachelor’s theses in Biotechnology Engineering in collaboration with companies.

    In December 2016, the schools held their annual Teaching Excellence Awards ceremonies. These awards are intended to recognize the quality of instruction provided by faculty members who regularly teach courses, as well as the learning achievements of their students. At each ceremony, the respective dean reviews the year’s achievements and presents the awards to the winning faculty members, who have demonstrated outstanding performance during the year and have an exceptional academic record within the faculty. The university has been presenting these awards since 1995.

    In December 2016, the Casa de los Escritores del Uruguay published the book *Adronis: The Secret Clarity of Things*, which includes *Adronitis* by Carol Milkewitz, a student in the Bachelor of Communication program with a concentration in Journalism, who won first prize in the 2015 Casa de los Escritores del Uruguay Young Writers’ Fiction Contest.

    The poster titled “HRP Nanocatalysts for Direct Enzyme Therapy” by Prof. Sonali Correa, a research assistant at the Biotechnology Laboratory of the School of Engineering, won the award for best poster presentation at the “2nd Latin American Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biotransformations.” The event, which took place from December 6 to 9, 2016, in Montevideo, was organized by the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of the Republic and the Department of Biotechnology at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

    On December 26, 2016, Dr. Andrés Ferragut, an associate professor in the Data Networks division of the School of Engineering, was appointed editor of the journal *IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking* for a two-year term, renewable for an additional two years.

    Four papers, co-authored by researchers from the Biotechnology Department of the School of Engineering, were presented at the “II Latin American Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biotransformations (SiLaBB II).” This peer-reviewed conference, organized by the University of the Republic and Universidad ORT Uruguay, took place from December 6 to 9, 2016, in Montevideo. The papers were published in the event’s abstract book.

    The project “Ubiquitous Learning: Mobile Devices and Learning Environments in the Initial Training of Secondary School Teachers in Uruguay,” presented by scholars from the Institute of Education, was selected in December 2016 by the Education Sector Fund, under the “Digital Inclusion” category, created by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) and the Ceibal Center Foundation.

    The article “The Cost of Crime and Violence in Five Latin American Countries,” co-authored by scholars from the School of Management and Social Sciences, was published in December 2016 in the peer-reviewed journal *European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research* (Volume 22, Issue 4), published by Springer.

    The article “Lipase immobilization on siliceous supports: Application to synthetic reactions,” co-authored by faculty members from the Biotechnology Department of the School of Engineering, was published in December 2016 in the peer-reviewed journal *Current Organic Chemistry* (Volume 21, Issue 2), published by Bentham Science.

    Joaquín Rossi won second prize in the 2016 Competitive Grants program in the Animation and Video Games category for his project Night Light.

    The Architecture program has once again been accredited for the maximum term under the ARCU-SUR Accreditation Mechanism. This accreditation certifies that the program and the institution offering it meet the academic quality criteria jointly established by the agencies of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela. On December 15, 2016, a ceremony was held at the Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education and Culture to present plaques to the accredited programs, attended by the Minister, Dr. María Julia Muñoz.

    The startups The Bot Makers, Trip Assistance, and La Máquina de Talento—whose members include graduates of the School of Engineering—were selected in December 2016 in the second edition of the Emprendetón competition, organized by CPA Innovation, the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (Cuti), the Da Vinci Foundation, and Universidad ORT Uruguay. They make up three of the four winning teams.

    The AgroBeep Systems Engineering senior thesis project, created by Agustín Arena, Maximiliano Casal, and Gonzalo Gutiérrez, won first prize from the National Academy of Engineering in the “Undergraduate Thesis Projects in Computer Science” category. The awards ceremony took place on December 9, 2016, in the Delmira Agustini Hall at the Solís Theater.

    Two startups incubated by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) were recognized by the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI) during a year-end closing and farewell event held on December 15, 2016. CUTI presented awards to companies and individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and growth of the industry.
