The Struggle Against Multipolarity,” presented by Dr. Oded Balaban, Full Professor at the University of Haifa and a member of the International Association for the Study of Controversies. The speaker analyzed the current political crisis in Ukraine. The event was organized by the Department of International Studies at the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences and the Department of Jewish Studies at the university.

mar 30, 2014On March 17, 2014, the five-year program will begin at the School of Engineering. This program, the only one of its kind in our country, trains professionals capable of working in all areas related to the creation, production, quality control, diagnosis, and evaluation of biotechnology processes. Since March 2010, the faculty has offered the Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology and the Biotechnology Technician program, a tertiary-level degree has by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII).

mar 30, 2014The articles “Mechanical properties of loblolly and slash pine timber from Uruguayan plantations” and “Tensile and compression strength parallel to grain of Uruguayan pine timber,” co-authored by faculty researchers from the School of Architecture, were accepted in March 2014 for presentation at the “68th Forest Products Society International Convention, World Conference on Timber Engineering.” The event, organized by the Forest Products Society, will take place from August 10 to 13, 2014, in Quebec City, Canada.

mar 30, 2014Papers by faculty members from the School of Engineering were accepted in March 2014 for presentation at the “10th International Conference on Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering (ICCMSE 2014),” which will take place April 4–7 in Athens, Greece. The event is organized by the International Conference on Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering and the European Society of Computational Methods in Sciences, Engineering, and Technology.

mar 30, 2014The Ava lamp, designed by Diego Chiola, a student in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program, won first prize in February 2014 in the “Student Division – Lighting Category” at Salão Design Movelsul Brasil 2014, a Latin American product design competition. Likewise, the Frans bench by Andrés Espina and Nicolás Noblia, students in the same program, won first prize in the “Student Division – Outdoor Furniture Category.” The exhibition of the winning entries and the awards ceremony took place from March 24 to 28, 2014, at the Parque de Eventos in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).

mar 30, 2014From February 25 to 27, 2014, the Faculty of Communication and Design hosted the presentation of the Integrative Projects – ReCreación14: “Real-World Design Experiences in Uruguay | 60 Companies | 65 Projects | 65 Experiences.” It consisted of an academic event organized by senior students in the Bachelor’s programs in Graphic, Industrial, Multimedia, and Fashion Design, as well as the Bachelor’s program in Animation and Video Games. The students presented on how the objectives of each project were achieved. The results were displayed starting on February 25 in an exhibition that ran through March 7 in the Design Hall.

The delegation consisted of a group of 18 students from the Professional MBA program, led by Prof. Frank Rydzewski, Clinical Professor, and Ms. Libby Hendley, Professional MBA Recruiter.

mar 27, 2014Inés Aguerrondo, a professor of Strategic Planning in Educational Management at the Institute of Education, and Dr. Denise Vaillant, Academic Secretary of the institute, presented the final report of the project “Study on Perspectives for Achieving Better Learning Opportunities for Children, Adolescents, and Youth in Latin America and the Caribbean,” carried out within the framework of the 2013 UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) Competitive Grant. The presentation took place on March 27 and 28, 2014, at UNESCO headquarters in Buenos Aires.

After restoring the footage, enhancing the audio, and gathering previously unseen material, the documentary chronicling Uruguay’s victory in the 1950 World Cup final was released.

mar 21, 2014“Chess, Private Lessons”—by Javier Hayrabedian and Inés Grah, graduates in Audiovisual Communication—was the only Uruguayan documentary selected by Al Jazeera for its 2014 edition of Viewfinder Latin America. The story of Luis Cuello, a former inmate seeking to reintegrate into society through chess, can be viewed online. In conversation with In situ, Hayrabedian explained that he was motivated to “tell a story about freedom.”

mar 20, 2014The haute couture atelier Tissora, founded and directed by Florencia Sica and María Emilia Rodríguez, graduates of the Bachelor of Fashion Design program, won First Prize for "Best Murga Costumes" at the 2014 Carnival for the costumes designed for Momolandia. The results of the awards, presented by the Municipality of Montevideo, were announced on March 19, 2014.
