1. ORT Rambla: the university’s new space
Following its inauguration on March 7, the university has new, strategically located academic space, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, where graduate courses, executive education programs, and advanced undergraduate courses from the School of Management and Social Sciences are offered.
ORT’s Department of Biotechnology and the CBI+I, which operates at the university, have developed—in collaboration with the La Buena Estrella veterinary laboratory—the first vaccine capable of effectively combating the native ticks that attack Uruguay’s livestock.
3. Doctorate: the highest academic degree that can be earned in a field
Dr. Denise Vaillant, director of the Doctoral Program in Education and dean of the Institute of Education, spoke about doctoral programs, their key features, and the contributions they make to both students and national research.
The pioneering company in the digitization of freight forwarders in Latin America, co-founded by Maximiliano Casal, became Uruguay’s second unicorn after raising $150 million in a Series C funding round. Newports was also featured in a Bloomberg article this year.
5. Rufina, the brand favored by the British royal family and made in Uruguay
The Rufina typeface, which was used in Queen Elizabeth II’s obituary and is used in all official communications from the British royal family, was designed by Uruguayan designer Martín Sommaruga.
6. An alternative, habitable, and infinite world: the metaverse
Teleportation, invisibility, and flight are arguably three of the superpowers most coveted by humankind throughout history. Until now, these have been impossible in the physical world, but they are now achievable in the virtual realm of the metaverse. Scholars at ORT are analyzing and envisioning what this new world might look like.
7. Global Communication: Global Interpretation with Local Knowledge
In August of this year, the Bachelor’s Degree in Global Communication was launched; it is the newest program offered by the School of Communication and Design and one of the most innovative in the country and the region.
8. What's Behind the Global Logistics Crisis
Product shortages and serious difficulties in transporting goods from one place to another, irregular container flows, stock shortages, and rising prices are just some of the consequences of the logistics crisis currently affecting the global market. Marco Guimaraens, associate professor of logistics and supply chain management at ORT, helps shed light on this phenomenon.
9. Fermtech, a startup aiming to shake up the Uruguayan market
Juan Ignacio Soldo and Mateo Bertolotti, biotechnology engineering students, devote part of their time to Fermtech, a startup they founded together. In April of this year, they launched Uruguay’s first non-alcoholic craft beer.
10. The only Uruguayan university in the Times Higher Education ranking
Following the release of the ranking identifying the best universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, in April 2022 the British publication Times Higher Education (THE) once again included Universidad ORT Uruguay—for the third consecutive year— as the only institution in our country to be included in this ranking.
