Following the recent release of the ranking identifying the best universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, the British publication Times Higher Education (THE) once again included Universidad ORT Uruguay in its 2022 ranking—for the third consecutive year—making it the only institution in our country to be included in this ranking.

In 2020, ORT’s inclusion in THE’s Latin America University Rankings marked Uruguay’s first appearance on this prestigious list, which evaluates universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The 2022 ranking includes 197 institutions across 13 countries, up from 177 institutions last year, and is based on the same rigorous performance indicators that underpin THE World University Rankings.

Top spots

The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile ranks first for the fourth consecutive year, while the University of São Paulo and the State University of Campinas, both in Brazil, remain in second and third place, respectively.

In the latest edition of the Latin America University Rankings, THE ranks Universidad ORT Uruguay the top 14 based on the “international outlook” indicator, which takes into account transnational collaboration, exchange agreements (which allow the Universidad ORT Uruguay to host international students and send local students to study abroad), and the recruitment of international faculty.

The Times Higher Education ranking, considered one of the largest and most diverse in the world, is regarded as a benchmark by students, faculty, governments, and industry experts.

The Importance of Research

To be included in THE's ranking, universities must have a significant volume of research that has been published internationally.

The primary factor evaluated is the number of published research articles and their citations. It also takes into account teaching data, the opinions of selected academics, internationalization, and industry outreach.

Universidad ORT Uruguay working consistently in these areas, and this serves as recognition of that work and the contributions it has made. It also reflects a recognition of the value of research in Uruguay and brings greater visibility to our country within the academic community.
