ORT’s History in Uruguay
The international ORT organization began its work in 1880 in St. Petersburg, Russia, with the mission of helping marginalized Jewish communities gain skills that would allow them to achieve economic independence.
In Montevideo, ORT was founded in 1942 by members of the Jewish community who wanted to support waves of immigrants fleeing Nazi persecution by teaching them trades that would help them integrate into Uruguayan society.
In 1996, ORT became the first institution in Uruguay to be officially recognized as a private university.
